Hi, I found a fledgling starling yesterday, I looked for what to feed him right away and made the dog/cat food mix. He ate it alright the first day but this morning he wouldn't eat anymore, he'd open his mouth to be fed but once I put the food in he throws it out and shakes his head after that he won't open the peak again. Is there a technique to feed him? Is it that he no longer needs mashed food or is he ready to start eating on his own? I'm really scared of what to feed him, I want him to grow healthy. Also, when should I start putting water in the cage?. How do I know how much to feed him?. I'm having trouble finding insectivore food at my local pet stores so I think I'll order some online but in the meanwhile what is the best way to go?

I use an oral syringe to feed. I think it is easy and less food gets on their feathers. Your bird should be getting enough water in the mash mix. When you transition to dry food you will want to offer a dish of water, but your bird will likely bathe in it.

How do I know when is time for the transition to dry food?. Yesterday he was on my backyard and he attempted to catch some insects that were in the grass.

When he no longer will accept food they way you are currently offering it to him. Before that happens be sure to let him see where the food come from by putting a dish of food in the cage as you feed him. You may want to leave food in the cage even when you aren't feeding. You will be able to tell if he has eaten any food.
